About the research

My dissertation, "And they will be one heart": the theory of consent in medieval canon law (2003) concerned the marriage legislation in medieval canon law and, more specifically, the theory of consent and its application. I have thereafter investigated specific aspects of the theory of consent and the conflicts it could generate, both in relation to secular society and to the institutional interests of the Church. It concerns notably the application of abjuration sub pena nubendi and the development, interpretation and application of force and fear as impediment to marriage. I have also partcipated in collaborative research on worldviews and ethics in premodern and early modern society. I am since 2017 attached as core scholar in the Centre for Privacy Studies (KU), an interdisciplinary centre dedicated to research on notions of privacy in early modern Europe.
