In my thesis project, I aim to examine early modern Swedish medals and their role in the cultural context of this time as well as their connection between the public/official and the private/the collector’s sphere.
I will work with objects ordered by the Swedish royal court between the sixteenth and eighteenth century. Questions asked in this study concern the custom of the use of medals; why did the sovereign donate medals (visual rhetoric) how were they exchanged and collected? Further, I plan to study the scope of the different medals; e.g. how they circulated through Europe’s courts and the different princely or private collections.
Medals were used as self-fashioning, the consciousforming and expressing of identities or recreation of oneself and by studyingthis material, one will gain a better understanding of how social conventions changed as well as norms of images.
