Course
Course 7.5 credits • BBHB40
The course offers an essential picture of the different types of documents, especially books, that man has made use of through history. Focus is on the printed book and its variations in form, and on digital platforms for reading: e-book readers, smart Phones, iPads. In the course the book is examined as a medium of communication and as an artefact. The relation between the medium - e.g. a printed book or an iPad - and the content that is being mediated - e.g. a novel - is a core issue. Important questions that are treated are: how does the medium affect the experience and comprehension of what we read; in what ways are the forms of books used strategically on the book market; what is the relation between printed books and digital books and, last but not least, what is a book really? The course gives a comprehensive introduction to themes and theories of book history and outlines the history of printing and graphic technique and the interaction between books, man and society.
