PhD Studies
The Department of Arts and Cultural Sciences offers PhD programmes in Art History and Visual Studies, Book History, Ethnology, History of Ideas and Sciences, Information Studies and Musicology.
A PhD programme consists of two parts: courses and doctoral thesis. The program forms a total of 240 ECTS credits, in which the thesis is to account for at least 120 credits. A Swedish PhD education lasts four years full-time. At Lund University it is fully funded including wages, social security and entitlement to benefits.
In addition to their research and studies, PhD candidates accepted to the graduate program at the Department of Arts and Cultural Sciences are expected to actively participate in the daily activities, including regular attendance of the research seminars.

Before writing your application, please note
Carefully read the instructions in the position announcement and note all of the materials that your application must include.
The applicants are ranked based on their earlier merits as well as on the quality and relevance of the research proposal for graduate studies. Therefore, in order to be assessed, all the necessary documents (including earlier Bachelor’s and Master’s theses as well as other possible publications) must be attached to the application, and they must be written in a language that can be understood by members of the reviewing committee (Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and English).

It is recommended that applicants read the description of the research profile of the research area before applying to the graduate program in order to obtain a broader awareness of the types of research carried out at the department at present. It should, however, be noted that it is up to each applicant to define their own field of future research in the research proposal submitted with the application to graduate studies.
In the obligatory research proposal you should clearly define the objective of your PhD research, and explain how it will contribute to the field of study you are interested in. In doing this you should relate your research objective to both past and on-going research in your field of interest and indicate the theoretical perspective(s) you anticipate to work with. The proposal should also contain a methodological discussion and time-table explaining how and along what time lines you shall conduct your research. Please note that the list of literature references that you include with your proposal is not counted as part of the 1500 word limit.
