This paper aims to investigate ideas and practices regarding transparency and explainability of artificial intelligence, prevalent amongst computer scientists (and adjacent experts) and medical scholars developing AI for medical or healthcare purposes. The analysis includes both the ideas about whether, why, and how the workings of AI systems in clinical implementation should be made transparent, as well as ideas and practices of explainability of AI in system development and medical research.
