Musicology and Intermedia Studies seminar: Sounding Difference
Fernando Iazzatta, University of São Paulo
Abstract
Difference is a generative force through which novelty and new forms of meaning emerge. In art, it functions as a productive tension that sharpens our critical and sensorial perception. In this talk, I will discuss aspects of Brazilian sound art through the lens of difference. I will begin by outlining some contextual and historical elements of this production, emphasizing its local characteristics. I will then examine selected works in which the idea of difference expands our perception beyond sound itself, engaging political, sensorial, and creative dimensions. Finally, I will reflect on my recent explorations of difference in field recording practices as a way of integrating creative processes with critical inquiry.
