Research seminar in Musicology and Intermedia studies

21 May 2024 15:15 to 17:00 Seminar

Seminar with lecturer in intermedia studies Nafiseh Mousavi

Title:

Starting from ‘miscommunication’: diversifying intermedial theory

Abstract:

This presentation proposes ‘miscommunication’ as a productive analytical point of departure in studying mediation and communication. Grounding her argument in recent theorisations in intermedial studies and the media-centered model of communication’ (Elleström 2021), Nafiseh Mousavi will discuss how non-normative types of communication can help us better understand the fundamental ‘messiness’ of communication and mediation.

In her discussion, Mousavi will depart from the existing research on miscommunication in conversation analysis and pragmatics, cognitive sciences, communication evolution and animal studies. She will then present an intermedial understanding of miscommunication and will use it to discuss the dynamics of (mis)communications in two zones of her own research: ‘migration’ and ‘neurodivergence’.

The presentation also provides a glimpse into recent approaches in intermedial studies that go beyond formal analysis of popular culture and inter-art relations, address pertinent social issues, and reshape intermedial theory as a multi-faceted framework for studying communication in a broad sense.
