This course introduces you to the concept of the Total Work of Art (Gesamtkunstwerk) and the attempts that have been made to bring together different art forms into a coherent whole.
You will learn about the historically specific concept of Gesamtkunstwerk, focusing on Richard Wagner's operatic aesthetic, as well as contemporary artistic and media forms of expression, such as film, music video, architecture, theater, and more. Throughout the course, you will pay particular attention to concepts such as art, intermediality, border crossings, aesthetics and ideology.
The course is part of Intermedia Studies, a subject that is aimed at those who are interested in art, music, media and communication and who want to combine these interests in their studies.
The course is also part of IMSA22, Intermedia Studies: Level 2.
