In this course, you focus on the emerging field of audionarratology and the central role of sound in storytelling from an intermedial and multimodal perspective.
Audionarratology is the study of storytelling with a focus on sound. In this context, sound refers to everything from music and spoken language to voices, intonation, and background noise. You will analyse audio stories, such as documentaries and dramas, in radio, television, film and digital media – but also news items and shorter narrative forms. Particular focus is placed on how various forms of audio storytelling appear to the audience. The course introduces theories and methods of interpretation and understanding, including semiotics, hermeneutics, rhetoric, new narratological theories, multimodality, and cultural theory.
