Course 7.5 credits • SASH56
What is Scandinavian design? In this course, we examine and analyse Scandinavian design in relation to wider design debvelopments in the world and the specific situations in the Scandinavian countries during the 20th and 21st centuries.
The course deals with Scandinavian design from the early 20th century to the present, placing it in historical and international contexts. We examine the emergence and development of a distinct 'Scandinavian style' and consider its relationship with modernism, contemporary design and trends. Topics include the history of style and fashion, the role of exhibitions, the use of materials and production methods, and the relationship with nature that has shaped Scandinavian design ideals. Along the way, we look at design objects in terms of form, function and cultural significance, as well as how Scandinavian design relates to today’s debates on sustainability.
