Collecting glory Practice and significances of early modern Swedish medals [workingtitle]

In this study, I will analyse the purpose and intended and unintended use of medals. By examining medals portraying members of the Swedish royal family from the late sixteenth to the late eighteenth century as an example, I aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the different practices and significances connected to this medium.

The thesis will focus on the medal and use the object as a point of departure. It will chronologically follow medal art, from the first medal issued in Sweden and with the firm establishment and a heterogenic use of the medium.

Besides numismatics and emblematic, my research interests concern cultural transfer, art collecting, visual communication during the early modern time.
