My research explores how algorithmically personalised information environments on social media platforms shape understandings of masculinity among young cis men in Sweden. I focus on how they encounter, engage with and interpret content that promotes essentialist, heteronormative and misogynistic ideals of masculinity - on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Snapchat.
These ideals circulate within what is commonly referred to as the ‘manosphere’, but are amplified more broadly through the commercial logic of today's digital information infrastructure. By examining information-related activities of young cis men on social media platforms, I explore how their masculine identities are navigated in the interplay of content, algorithms and user agency. The aim is to develop a nuanced understanding of the continual negotiations over masculinities that occurs at the intersection of the manosphere, the digital information infrastructure and the information-related activities of young cis men.
