My licentiate focuses on the Swedish NationalMuseum from 1890 to 1920. Its primary concern is the acquisition of oilpaintings by means of public funds as well as private donations in the form ofboth monetary resources and actual paintings. The study aims to highlight thequantitative and qualitative significance of procured paintings by investigatingthe number of paintings acquired over time together with factors such as artists’country of origin as well as the time period and motive of works. These variableswill provide a picture of the significance of donations and their influence onthe art collections at the National Museum. In addition, the study will look atdecision makers and individual donators as well as the social driving forces behindthe desire to contribute to a public museum. Theories put forward by the Frenchsociologist Pierre Bourdieu serve as the main theoretical framework.
