Course
Course 7.5 credits • SASH61
In this course, you will explore health, lifestyle, and medicine through cultural and ethnographic perspectives. The course discusses different urgent societal issues relating to illness, diagnosis and well-being in contemporary and historical societies.
This course covers topics like the body, illness experiences, disability, ethics, and the new health economy from a cultural perspective. The course is grounded in current research in ethnology, medical anthropology, and cultural studies. You will discuss issues related to different cases, for example, the doctor-patient encounter, living with chronic illness, controversial biotechnological diagnoses and treatments, and discourses on risk and responsibility. Through lectures, seminars, and group exercises, you will gain a theoretical understanding of how identity, class, gender, ethnicity, and age affect medical treatments and lifestyle patterns. By the end of the course, you will have a deeper understanding of the cultural dimensions of illness and health.
