Colonialism, Capitalism, and European Medical Research in the Tropics, 1900-1914

Deborah Neill is a Modern European Historian at York University in Toronto, specializing in the histories of Germany, France, European colonialism in Africa, and the history of colonial medicine. At the seminar, she presents her research.

The presentation begins with an exploration of the historiography of transimperial medical networks and points to new work on knowledge exchange in medicine, the history of tropical medicine, and European colonialism up to the First World War. Deb Neill will also discuss her work on European medical research in Africa and the relationship of medicine to colonialism and colonial culture in the early twentieth century. Finally, she will turn to some new directions she is pursuing including the influence of capitalism on medical research in this period.

The seminar is organized by Medical Humanities Research Node.
